Learn the answer to “How many times can you take the Texas real estate exam” with a practical overview of Texas real estate licensing requirements, education, exams, and next steps.

In Texas, there is no permanent lifetime limit on how many times you can take the real estate licensing exam. If you do not pass on the first try, you can usually retake it, but the Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC) does have rules that affect repeated failures.
After three unsuccessful attempts, you cannot simply keep rescheduling the exam without taking additional steps. Before trying again, you must complete more qualifying education approved for Texas real estate licensure.
That requirement is meant to help you strengthen the areas where you struggled before another attempt. It also makes good preparation especially important the first time around.
The exam includes both national real estate topics and Texas-specific material, so studying from a Texas-focused pre-licensing course can be very helpful. A course built around Texas requirements can make it easier to stay organized and ready for test day.
If you fail once or twice, you can usually retest by following the exam provider’s scheduling process and paying the fee again. Once you reach a third failed attempt, though, additional education is required before TREC will allow another try.
Because licensing rules can change, it is smart to check the current requirements with TREC before you register or retest. That is especially important if you are close to the three-attempt limit.
The best strategy is to prepare thoroughly so you can pass efficiently and avoid delays. Focusing on Texas real estate law, exam practice questions, and the test format can save both time and money.
