Changing real estate brokers in Texas is usually simple, but it should be done in the right order to avoid gaps in your license status or problems with advertising and transactions. The process begins when you notify your current broker in writing that you are ending the sponsorship.

Next, your new broker must submit a sponsorship request through the Texas Real Estate Commission’s REALM Portal. You should then accept the new sponsorship and confirm that it shows correctly in the system before acting under the new brokerage.

Do not assume the move is complete just because you signed with a new firm. Check the portal carefully to make sure your license is not left inactive and that the change is fully reflected.

It is also smart to keep your current broker informed professionally. A written notice helps document when the relationship ended and can prevent disputes about commissions, listings, or pending deals.

Once the change is effective, update your business materials right away. That includes your advertising, email signature, website profile, signs, and any required brokerage disclosures such as the IABS notice and related forms.

If you have active transactions, coordinate with both brokers on how to handle client communication and pending contracts during the transition. Clear communication can help prevent confusion and protect your clients.
