Start your licensing education with LEAP's Texas real estate pre-licensing course, designed to help you complete the required coursework online.
In Texas, new sales agents must complete required early-career education before their first license renewal. This is often referred to as post-licensing-style education and is a key part of staying compliant with Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC) rules.
The main requirement is typically 90 hours of Sales Agent Apprentice Education (SAE), which includes a 30-hour Real Estate Brokerage course. These hours are designed to help new agents move beyond pre-licensing theory and into the practical work of real estate.
This training covers topics that matter once you are working under a broker, such as agency, contracts, ethics, and everyday transaction practice. It is meant to support the transition from classroom learning to actual field experience.
In addition to SAE, many renewals also require 8 hours of Legal Update courses. Because of that, it is important to keep track of both your early education hours and your ongoing continuing education requirements.
After the first renewal period, Texas generally shifts to standard continuing education. In most cases, sales agents and brokers must complete 18 hours every two years, usually including Legal Update I and II along with other approved coursework.
If you are still preparing for licensure, it helps to plan ahead for these later requirements now. Choosing a strong pre-licensing program can make the transition easier and reduce surprises after you pass the exam.
Texas real estate rules can change, so TREC should always be your best source for the latest licensing and renewal details. The bottom line is that Texas does require post-licensing education in the form of required early hours, followed by ongoing continuing education after that.
