Yes. If you want to work as a Texas real estate sales agent, you need a sponsoring broker before you can practice real estate under your license. The Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC) may issue your license in an inactive status at first, but that does not let you start helping clients right away.
To perform licensed brokerage activities in Texas, your license must be activated under a Texas-licensed broker. The broker supervises your work and is responsible for your actions during transactions. Without that sponsorship, you generally cannot show homes, negotiate offers, or conduct real estate business for compensation.
For most new agents, the process is straightforward: complete the required education, pass the state exam, apply for the license, and then secure a sponsoring broker to activate it. If you do not have a broker lined up immediately, TREC may still process your license, but it will remain inactive until sponsorship is arranged.
That can be useful if you are still interviewing brokerages, but it does not allow you to begin working independently. Getting licensed and being allowed to practice are not the same thing.
Choosing the right sponsoring broker is an important business decision, not just a paperwork step. Consider commission splits, training, mentorship, office culture, lead support, and the type of real estate the brokerage handles.
If you are still working on the education side, a Texas pre-licensing course such as Leap Real Estate can be a helpful place to start: https://leaprealestate.com/state-licenses/texas-pre-licensing. It is smart to research brokerages early so you are ready to move from inactive to active status as soon as possible.
Keep in mind that licensing rules can change, so it is wise to verify current requirements with TREC before you apply or activate your license. In short, yes, you need a sponsoring broker to actually practice as a Texas real estate sales agent.
