Explore “What happens if I don't complete my Texas real estate CE on time” with a straightforward guide to Texas real estate licensing, required education, exam preparation, and applicant responsibilities.

If you do not complete your Texas real estate continuing education (CE) on time, you may still have a short window to catch up, but it usually comes with extra cost and a deadline.
In Texas, license holders who miss the CE deadline may be able to use a CE deferral option, which typically gives them 60 additional days to finish their education while keeping the license active.
That deferral is not free. Texas licensees generally pay a $200 CE deferral fee to get the extra time. It can help if you are only slightly behind, but the extension is limited and you still must complete all required CE by the new deadline.
If you miss that extra 60-day period, your license can be moved to inactive status. Once inactive, you cannot legally perform real estate activities that require an active Texas license until you complete the steps needed to restore it.
Late renewal can also create problems. You may face additional fees, and late renewal does not provide the same CE deferral benefit, so waiting too long can make the situation more expensive and less flexible.
The best approach is to track your renewal date well in advance and finish CE early. If you are still working toward licensure, a Texas pre-licensing course such as Leap Real Estate’s Texas pre-licensing option can help you understand the state’s licensing structure and stay on track.
Texas real estate rules can change, so it is wise to confirm current requirements directly with the Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC). TREC can verify your renewal status, CE deadlines, deferral eligibility, and any fees that apply to your license type.
