Understand “What continuing education is required for Texas real estate agents” and review the Texas real estate rules, licensing steps, education requirements, and practical details that may apply.

Texas real estate agents in good standing generally must complete 18 hours of continuing education every two years to renew an active license. These hours help agents stay current on Texas law, contracts, and everyday practice issues that affect real estate transactions.
A major part of the requirement is the legal update coursework. Most agents must complete Legal Update I and Legal Update II, 4 hours each, for a total of 8 hours. These courses cover changes in Texas real estate law, legal risks, and professional responsibilities.
Agents also typically need 3 hours of contract-related coursework. This training reinforces the proper use of Texas real estate contracts and related documents, which is especially important in a state with its own rules and forms.
The remaining 7 hours are usually electives. These can be chosen based on an agent’s business needs and may include topics like ethics, agency, marketing, or specialized property issues.
If you are renewing for the first time, additional Sales Agent Apprentice Education (SAE) rules may apply. First renewals can be easy to misunderstand, so it is important to check your license status carefully and confirm exactly what applies to you.
Because continuing education rules can change, it is best to verify the latest requirements with the Texas Real Estate Commission before enrolling in courses or submitting renewal paperwork. TREC is the official source for current deadlines, exemptions, and special conditions.
If you are still working toward licensure, a Texas pre-licensing program can provide a strong foundation for later continuing education. In short, plan on 18 hours every two years and stay ahead of the deadline to keep your license active and your knowledge up to date.
