How much experience do I need to become a broker in California? Get the key California requirements and next steps.
By Leap Real Estate Team | 2 minutes read
California does require prior real estate experience to become a broker: in most cases, you need at least 2 years of full-time licensed salesperson experience within the last 5 years (or the equivalent in part-time experience) to qualify for the broker license. So if you’re asking how much experience you need, the short answer is two years, though the state will look at the specifics of how that experience was earned and documented. Start your journey with LEAP's California real estate pre-licensing course.
That experience requirement is only one part of the process. California also expects broker candidates to complete broker-level pre-licensing education and pass the state broker exam. If you do not yet have the required experience, you can still work toward it by becoming a salesperson first and building the time needed. For many people, that means planning a multi-step path: get licensed, work under a broker, and then apply for the broker license once the experience window is met.
Timing and cost can vary based on how quickly you finish your coursework, how soon you can document qualifying experience, and whether you’re studying while working. California’s licensing path can feel more demanding than some states because both education and experience matter, so it helps to keep records of your transactions, duties, and employment history from the start. If you’re still early in the process, factor in exam prep, application fees, background checks, and the time needed to build real-world experience.
A good next step is to review California’s broker and salesperson requirements together so you can map out the fastest realistic route for your situation. If you’re beginning with the basics, a California pre-licensing course can help you get started with the education side while you plan your experience timeline.
