How do I reinstate an expired California real estate license? Get the key California requirements and next steps.
By Leap Real Estate Team | 1 minutes read
If your California real estate license has expired, you can usually reinstate it by completing the required renewal steps through the California Department of Real Estate (DRE) and paying the late renewal fee. In most cases, an expired license can still be renewed for up to two years after the expiration date; after that, it generally can’t be renewed and you must start over as a new applicant. Start your journey with LEAP's California real estate pre-licensing course.
For California, the main issue is timing. A late renewal usually requires the full continuing education package for your license type, which is commonly 45 hours for salespersons and brokers, along with the renewal application and fees. The sooner you act, the simpler it is: if your license is only recently expired, reinstatement is typically much easier than if you’ve waited months or years.
Cost and requirements depend on how long the license has been expired and whether your education is current. Expect to pay the DRE renewal fee plus any delinquency fee, and budget for approved continuing education courses if you still need them. If you’re beyond the two-year window, you’ll likely need to meet the current licensing requirements again, which may include pre-licensing education and passing the state exam.
A good next step is to check your exact status on the DRE website, confirm whether you’re eligible for late renewal, and make a checklist of what’s missing. If you end up needing to restart, or if you want a fresh path into the field, California real estate pre-licensing course is a helpful place to begin.
