Do I need fingerprints for a California real estate license? See the requirements, timing, costs, and practical next steps in this California licensing guide.

Here’s the short answer: yes, California requires fingerprints for a real estate license. If you want to become a California real estate salesperson or broker, you must complete a fingerprinting/background check so the California Department of Real Estate (DRE) can review your criminal history before issuing the license. Start your journey with LEAP's California real estate pre-licensing course.
In California, this is usually done through Live Scan, which electronically sends your fingerprints to the California Department of Justice and the FBI. You’ll typically be fingerprinted as part of the license application process, and your license cannot be issued until the background check is complete. If you’re applying from outside California, the process may be slightly different and can involve fingerprint cards instead of Live Scan.
Timing and cost can vary. Some applicants finish fingerprinting early so there’s no delay later, while others wait until they’re ready to submit the application. Fees are separate from your exam and license fees and often include a DOJ/FBI processing charge plus a small rolling fee charged by the Live Scan provider. If you have any past criminal or disciplinary issues, it’s best to address them honestly, since that can affect review time and eligibility.
A good next step is to complete your required education and get familiar with the licensing process before applying. If you’re still at the start of the journey, the California pre-licensing course at California real estate pre-licensing course can help you move forward with confidence and understand what comes next, including fingerprints, exam steps, and license submission.
