Do I have to take the California exam if I already have a real estate license in another state? Get the key California requirements and next steps.

California generally does not let you skip the exam just because you already hold a real estate license in another state. In most cases, if you want to become licensed in California, you must still meet California’s licensing requirements and pass the California exam. There is no broad real estate reciprocity in California. Start your journey with LEAP's California real estate pre-licensing course.
That said, having an active license elsewhere can still help in practical ways. If you’re already experienced, you may be able to move through the process faster because you’re familiar with real estate terminology and practice. But California has its own rules, forms, and legal requirements, so you should expect to study specifically for California law, agency, disclosures, and exam content. For many applicants, the biggest difference is the state-specific exam—not the general real estate concepts.
Your timing and cost will depend on whether you’re applying for a salesperson or broker license, how much education you still need, and whether you’re using any prior coursework or experience toward California requirements. California usually requires approved pre-licensing education, a state exam application, fingerprinting, and licensing fees. If you’re coming from another state, it’s smart to confirm exactly what you still need before scheduling the exam so you don’t waste time or money.
A good next step is to review California’s licensing rules and map out your remaining requirements. If you need a structured way to prepare, a California pre-licensing course can help you focus on the state-specific material that appears on the exam.
