Can I work immediately after passing the California real estate exam? Get the key California requirements and next steps.

Yes—once you pass the California real estate exam, you are one important step closer, but you usually cannot start working as a licensed agent until your license is officially issued by the California Department of Real Estate (DRE) and you’re affiliated with a broker. In California, passing the exam alone does not authorize you to practice real estate independently. Start your journey with LEAP's California real estate pre-licensing course.
After the exam, the DRE still has to finalize your license application, which can take some time depending on processing volume and whether any additional documents are needed. You’ll also need to be sponsored by a licensed California broker before you can begin acting as an agent. If you pass the exam but haven’t yet chosen a broker, that step can affect how quickly you can get started earning commissions.
Timing and cost can vary based on your application status, fingerprinting, and whether you already completed all pre-licensing education requirements. California requires 135 hours of approved pre-licensing coursework before you can take the exam, plus exam and licensing fees. If anything is missing or needs review, that can delay the start of your first transaction work.
The best next step is to line up a broker, finish any remaining paperwork, and track your license status with the DRE. If you’re still preparing, a California real estate pre-licensing course can help you cover the required education and stay on track for the exam and licensing process.
