Can I hold real estate licenses in California and another state at the same time? Get the key California requirements and next steps.

Yes. In California, you can hold a real estate license at the same time as a license in another state, as long as you meet the rules of both states and there is no conflict with your brokerage or disciplinary status. Many agents do this to work across state lines, but you must keep each license active and in good standing separately. If one state requires a salesperson to be affiliated with a broker, for example, that requirement still applies even if you are licensed elsewhere. Start your journey with LEAP's California real estate pre-licensing course.
For California specifically, your license is issued and regulated by the California Department of Real Estate (DRE). If you already hold a license in another state, California may have different pathways depending on whether that state has a reciprocal arrangement or whether you are applying by exam. Even when reciprocity is available, it usually is not automatic—you still need to complete California’s application steps and follow its education, exam, and fingerprint requirements.
What affects timing and cost is mostly whether your other license can help you qualify faster and whether your education overlaps. California’s pre-licensing requirement is 135 hours, and you must pass the state exam before you can be licensed. If you are also maintaining another state license, you may have extra costs for dues, continuing education, broker fees, and renewal deadlines in both states, so it helps to plan carefully.
If you are considering California as one of your licenses, a good next step is to review the DRE requirements and compare them with your current state’s rules. A California pre-licensing course can help you get started with the required education and prepare for the exam, such as the one offered here: California real estate pre-licensing course
